2025 Universities National Match - Match Report

2025 Scottish Universities team

On 24 July at Bisley, the Scottish Universities Fullbore team claimed a brilliant victory in the annual Universities National match, overcoming England by 6-points and 9-Vs. This marks the first win for Scotland in several years, ending England’s run of successes.

The match was contested in typical Bisley fashion, with a light drizzle and noticeable wind adding to the challenge. Our squad brought together four shooters from Edinburgh University RC and four from St Andrews University RC, expertly coached by Mark Wriggly and Jon Sweet. England edged ahead at 300 yards, but Scotland hit our stride at 500x, surging ahead by 12 points. While England clawed back some ground at 600x, our consistency across the board, combined with slick drills both on and off the point, helped ease the pressure on our firers, proved decisive.

Special mention goes to George Wood, who took top shot with a 32.3 at 300x and an impressive 35.6 at both 500x and 600x. Our thanks to Henry Waldern, captain of the English Universities Fullbore team, for a great match played in excellent spirit. This was a well-earned and long‑awaited triumph for Scotland, one we’ll be looking to build on next year.
