2026 All Ranges Matches Report and Results

All Ranges Matches

Sunday 26 April 2026

This year’s event was held on the Denwood Ranges on Sunday 26th April.

The ranges had been well prepared for us

Attendance was slightly down on previous years: a good entry in class “A”, but only three in each of classes “B, C & D” – so these competitors were guaranteed a top three place!

For the Ladies’ competition there were two entries and for the Veterans  there were only three. Only one (U21) junior had entered.

In fairly benevolent conditions, the outdoor competition (a double Dewar:  40 shots each at 50 metres and 40 at 100yds) produced some very close scoring but the winner in Class A , Chris Stirling, came out 4 points ahead of his closest rival: a margin he maintained over the aggregate result after just beating Peter Richards on countback at the 25yds event. He is on top form just now – following on from victory in the Lothian & Borders “World Cup” competition and also winning the recent final of the “STS “Speedway” event.

Just behind Chris in the Class A Aggregate, there was a tie for second place, with Joe Docherty winning by one point on countback from Pete Richards.

Meanwhile, in Class “B”, Sheena Sharp was pipped at the post by Callum Rose, who scored 1161 against her 1160 in the aggregate event. The results in the other classes were rather more clearcut.

This year, in spite of an offer to amend the rules on the day to count just the top 4 leading scores, only two inter-regional teams were entered – so we reverted to the established format of counting in the top 5 scores from a team of 6.

In both of these matches the Highlands and Islands team comfortably outshot the team from Grampian. They had enough strength in depth to provide a different line up for the short range and the double dewar events.

Several volunteers had to call off at short notice, so my thanks go to Ian Shanks for opening and setting up the ranges, Jon Latimer for taking on the role of outdoor Range Control Office for the entire day, and Mark Flett who set up the spreadsheets and produced the ongoing results – as well as taking turns with me at supervising the indoor, 25yd, range details.

I also have to thank Ian, Jon and Sheena for assisting me in deciding upon the approach to scoring a very curious 50metres diagram where the shot pattern on the card looked quite different from that on the backer, there was a different shot count there as well as a strange pattern.

dFinally, thanks to Denwood Rifle Association for the use of their excellent ranges and facilities.

It was a lovely day, and everyone appeared to enjoy the shooting. It was especially rewarding to see some competitors on the range for their first ever outdoor shoot, they did very well in unfamiliar surroundings. It would be good if, next year, more could follow their example and come along for the experience.

Next time, bring a friend – or even an enemy - if they want to shoot outdoors!
