Development Programme Coaches
Rifle • Pistol • Shotgun
Scottish Target Shooting is recruiting three Development Coaches to help establish our new Development Programme – one each for Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun.
Supported by sportscotland Pathway Investment, the Programme will provide structured coaching for athletes developing towards Olympic and Paralympic events, helping bridge the gap between club, school or university shooting and the STS Performance Programme.
We’re looking for people with relevant shooting knowledge, an interest in developing athletes and a willingness to develop their own coaching. Applications are welcome from existing coaches and current or former athletes looking to move into coaching.
The Role
Each coach will lead their discipline’s Development Squad, supported by STS staff and the relevant Performance Programme coach. Responsibilities will include:
Planning and delivering six two-day training camps each year.
Supporting athlete assessment and selection.
Helping athletes develop technical skills, effective training habits and competition preparation.
Agreeing development goals with athletes and reviewing their progress.
Working with personal, club and Performance coaches to support athlete development.
Taking part in the coach development and mentoring programme.
Programme activity will initially be delivered nationally within Scotland. Dates and venues will be agreed as part of programme planning, with camp delivery expected primarily at weekends.
Support For Your Development
Alongside the squad coaching role, STS will provide 10 paid coach development days per year, comprising:
Four days of CPD workshops aligned with the developing STS Athlete Blueprint.
Four days attending Performance Programme camps to observe and coach alongside experienced coaches.
Two days’ equivalent of individual mentoring and development reviews, spread across the year.
STS will also fund progression towards the ISSF Academy ‘C’ Course, including the prerequisite ‘D’ Course where needed, subject to course availability and admission. Coaches already holding ‘C’ or higher will agree an appropriate development plan with STS.
ISSF course study is additional to the paid development days and will be undertaken in the coach’s own time. Each course runs online for up to 12 weeks, with an indicative commitment of approximately four hours per week for ‘D’ and five hours per week for ‘C’.
Who We’re Looking For
You will bring:
Relevant technical knowledge and experience in your discipline.
The ability to support safe, purposeful shooting practice.
An interest in helping developing athletes learn and progress.
Clear communication and the ability to work constructively with athletes, coaches and families.
A commitment to inclusive coaching and adapting your approach to individual needs.
The organisation and availability to prepare and deliver squad activity and participate in your own development.
Previous coaching experience and an ISSF Academy qualification are desirable. You do not need to hold ‘D’ or ‘C’ when applying, but you must be willing to work towards ‘C’ where required.
Appointments will be subject to the relevant safeguarding (PVG), qualification and suitability checks.
Payment and Commitment
Squad delivery: £150 per day for 12 camp days annually.
Coach development: £150 per day for 10 agreed development days annually.
Total planned paid days: 22 per coach, equivalent to £3,300 annually.
Funded ISSF course fees as outlined above.
Contract duration, arrangements for preparation and work between camps, and expenses will be confirmed in the final role terms.
How To Apply
Please complete our online application form, outlining your relevant shooting and coaching experience, why you would like to support developing athletes, and what you hope to gain from the role. Please indicate which discipline you are applying for.
Closing date: 31 October 2026 (23:59)
Expected start: As soon as possible (subject to necessary PVG checks)
