In the afternoon of 27 January 2022 STS received a communication from Napier University stating that due to the impact of COVID on staff availability, it has impaired their ability to open the facility for the length of time originally booked, and therefore the ability of STS to deliver the 2022 Scottish Air Pistol & Rifle Championships. The Health and Safety Executive are gathering information and evidence to support the development of a UK REACH restriction dossier (report) on risks to the environment and human health of the use of lead in ammunition (projectiles) in all areas of the Great Britain (Military and non-civilian use of ammunition is excluded). STS wanted to bring this to the attention of the shooting community. The call for evidence closes on 22 October 2021. We have been made aware that the user database of the popular organisation for peer to peer selling of guns, Gun Trader, has been hacked and therefore information on users has been illegally acquired. It has been reported that Gun Trader has 111,000 users on its database and the information obtained by hackers includes names, addresses, telephone numbers and some GPS location data. 5,500 are reported to have come from Scotland and undoubtedly some will be STS members so we wanted to advise of the implications of this and what safety action should be taken.
STS is pleased to announce that applications for the 2021-22 Performance Programme will be opening on Sunday 1st August 2021. and will close just before midnight on Tuesday 31st August and late applications will not be accepted. We are keen to make sure that no one misses out on this opportunity so please remember:
Applications are open to non-STS members (although STS membership must be taken out if accepted on to the programme);
Our programme is fully inclusive so we welcome applications from all athletes, including para athletes; and
We are also considering applications for Talent Transfer from athletes currently competing in non-Olympic/Paralympic disciplines or events so if you are a talented athlete in a non-ISSF discipline, we still want to hear from you.
Following a review of the 2022 Commonwealth Archery and Shooting Championships scheduled to take place in India, the difficult decision has been made to cancel the event. This comes after careful consideration of several factors, including the continued uncertainty created by the ongoing global pandemic.
The 2020-21 Schools Pistol Championships came to an exciting end with the National Final in the last week of May.
Over 100 Finalists across all the regions in the UK shot their National Final competition targets remotely and submitted their scores and targets centrally, in their bid to become the 2020-21 National Champion.
Our Scottish athletes were fantastic with Tara Kane taking the Junior Individual Gold and Lockerbie Academy winning the Junior Team Gold.
Tom MacTaggart was the 4th ranked male in the Intermediate Individual event
Isobel Mactaggart just missed out on a medal and finished 4th overall and 4th ranked female in the Senior Individual event with Hamish McDonald closely behind as 5th overall and first in the male rankings.

STS has today published its Selection Policy for the 2022 Commonwealth Shooting Championships. The Commonwealth Championships is due to take place in India in January 2022, although there are still many details for the event still to be confirmed, however STS wanted to give all shooters guidance on what will be required. The selection window will be running from 1st April to 30th September 2021 to achieve the necessary requirements, however a notification of interest for selection must be declared by non Performance Programme athletes by 31st July 2021. Leading figures from across Scottish sport have met to discuss the continued impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19) and the role the sport sector will play in the nation’s long-term recovery from the pandemic.
Members of the Scottish Governing Bodies Chief Executive Officers Forum were joined by Minister for Public Health and Sport, Mairi Gougeon, and Chief Executive of sportscotland, Stewart Harris, at the virtual meeting.
On 23 February the First Minister provided the Scottish Parliament with an update on COVID-19 and related restrictions. The statement set out indicative dates to return to a system of levels from the last week of April. We wanted to make members aware of the key points, but to note that these dates are all subject to there not being any further setbacks or outbreaks:
STS can confirm that we have now updated our guidance in view of the new Protection Level system implemented by the Scottish Government on 2 November. In this article, we have included the latest full set of guidance notes, as well as updating the information available on the homepage of our website.
On Wednesday 7 October, the First Minister made a statement to Scottish Parliament outlining a series of temporary measures intended to stop the rise in coronavirus cases in Scotland. These measures are a mixture of national and regional in scope, that will come into force from 6pm on Friday 9 October for the hospitality changes and 1am Saturday 10 October for all other changes. These measures are to remain in place until to Sunday 25 October inclusive, unless a statement is made prior to them indicating any further change. STS has reviewed these, along with guidance from sportscotland, and tried to communicate the key points which can be found in our website article.
