Sunday the 21st April saw the first Target Sprint event in Scotland. This brilliant event that consists of a combination of 10metre air rifle shooting and running was a fantastic success. Scottish Saltires from Aberdeen and Target Technique from Inverness combined forces and resources to deliver a welcoming event for athletes from all over Scotland. The support from British Shooting, Scottish Target Shooting and Aberdeenshire Clubsport provided the perfect combination of support to make this event a success.
The event is open to athletes age 11 upwards to masters. We even had some “mums on the run!”
The first race of the day was the youth women’s category won by Penny Flett. At only 11 years old she set the bar exceptionally high with very accurate fast shooting and a strong run finishing in a time of 6mins 48 secs.
This was followed by the youth men’s category split into 2 heats. Not to be outdone by his younger sister Bruce Flett age 13 raised the bar even higher to 6mins 41secs.
The adults races then followed. The women’s class was won by Kerstin Malone from Edinburgh. Exceptional shooting and a fast run meant she gave herself a fabulous lead and a fantastic time of 7mins on the dot. The men’s race was a cliffhanger with Shaun Finch from Aberdeen managing to reel in Mikey Gilmour from Inverness on the last lap finishing on times of 7mins 11 secs and 7mins 25secs respectively. All these athletes are new to Target Sprint and they loved it.
There were some special Scottish themed Scottish trophies that were very well received.
A huge congratulations to all those that have qualified for the National Series final. The final is being held at Cranleigh School in Surrey on the 15th September.
