Pistol Development Squad Summer Report 2023

Pistol Development Squad Update

by

Nick Pye

I am, again, very pleased to announce that the last set of Development Squad meetings were a success, with good attendance on each meeting.

This means lots of learning and also, very importantly, we can keep the program running with our costs covered.

Plus, we have new training dates!

These will be once every two months for the next three meetings unfortunately, as I am so busy, but I hope to get them back to once a month after that.

New Dates are:

  • Saturday 23rd September 2023.

  • Saturday 4th November 2023.

  • Saturday 6th January 2024.

I would personally like to extend my thanks to the Athletes who have taken part, and the coaches who have committed their time.

It has been fantastic fun for me to be included in this and it's great to see our sport being taken seriously; the dedication to travel long distances and spend the day with us is very rewarding for me to see.

Scotland has always had a strong Pistol Team; I can't wait to see how the development squad continue to improve.

We have been using the excellent Callander shooting range again.

Training-wise, we have been looking at adding a mental process to our physical shot process; this means better concentration and consistency in shot timing, as well as helping with competition performance, rather than just performing well in training.

We have looked at Range Etiquette, and how to deal with the things that can crop up in competition without loss of scores, or hair.

And, we have been shooting a lot of Finals, which are a good excuse to get the music on and get clapping!

Talking of music we did a distraction training session, which was, again, a lot of fun for me to do, although I'm not so sure about everyone else! I am happy to report that the Athletes came through with flying colours.

On the technical side we have been examining how the grip fits the hand and how to adjust it in conjunction with the finger placement on the trigger and sight alignment.

Once more, a big thanks to everyone who helped with the coaching. We could not run this with only one person.

Also I would like to especially mention Janis Thomson, who took some of the Squad to the Junior international competition at Bisley; a very big commitment and a great experience for them. Thank You!
