Board Vacancy: Olympic Shotgun AMG Chair

Olympic Shotgun AMG Chair

Role Type: Non-Executive Director

Term of Office: 3 Years to 2026 (Maximum of 9 Years/3 Terms, see below)

Committees: Board of Directors (member) & Relevant Association Management Group (chair)

The AMG Chair role with STS provides an exciting opportunity to develop a discipline within STS, a relatively new governing body that is constantly growing in size and strength, underpinned by our new strategic plan. As STS membership grows and relationships develop and strengthen, there are increasing opportunities to build all forms of target shooting but also an increasing need to make sure each form is well represented, supported and valued. Applicants need to have knowledge of their primary discipline, providing leadership skills and the ability to form and lead a small group of volunteers to drive the development of your primary discipline, supported by the STS staff and board.

Who Are Scottish Target Shooting?

Scottish Target Shooting (STS) is a unified governing body created in 2016 to help develop the sport of target shooting in Scotland. As a new governing body, we are looking to have a positive impact on clubs and help individuals of all abilities, across all the various disciplines of the sport. Having started our latest 4 year investment cycle in 2019, this is an exciting time to join the Board and support the organisation through the next 4 year cycle implementing our new strategic plan, focusing on supporting and growing the different varieties of target shooting from the grassroots up to Commonwealth and Olympic Games level. Each AMG Chair plays a crucial part in providing a link between their discipline, the Board and staff of STS. Each AMG provides a forum to make sure STS is serving each discipline. The AMG Chairs are crucial in ensuring information from each discipline is fed up but also fed back down to make sure STS is doing all it can to support its members.

What Will Be My Tasks and Responsibilities?

AMG Chairs are responsible for ensuring their AMG leads the planning and programming of events for disciplines managed by that AMG. They must also represent the view of STS members from those disciplines, keeping the Board informed of any developments that may impact members. You will be asked to drive the following areas, supported by your fellow directors on the Board and senior staff:

  • Form an Association Management Group (AMG) from the membership of STS with that primary discipline

  • Set the agenda, chair, facilitate and plan the annual cycle of AMG meetings

  • Work with STS staff and the AMG to plan, budget and deliver a calendar of events and activities that meets the needs of STS members in disciplines covered by that AMG

  • Support the drive for STS membership growth within the shooting discipline covered by that AMG

  • Lead partnerships on behalf of the Board with agencies relevant to disciplines covered by that AMG to ensure the interests of STS and its members are represented

  • Understand the views of the membership directly and through fellow directors and staff

  • Completing any additional projects as requested by the Chair

How Long Will I Be Expected To Serve For?

AMG Chair roles are elected for terms of 3 years. At the end of the term AMG Chair Director roles must be re-elected to the Board. Directors may only serve a maximum of 3 consecutive terms (maximum of 9 years) on the Board, regardless of how many different roles they have held during this time. Only if a Director is appointed as STS Chair may they serve longer than 9 consecutive years on the Board.

What Will Be My Annual Commitments?

The following meetings are the regular, scheduled meetings that can be planned in the diary in advance. There will be times when other meetings are required but the volunteer aspect of the role will always be respected:

  • Attend 4-6 STS Board meetings held for 2-3 hours every 2 months

  • Chair 2-6 AMG meetings held as they see fit

  • Attend the STS AGM held on a weekend day in April every year

  • Represent STS at meetings of external groups as and when required/requested to do so

Is This A Paid Position?

The position of AMG Chair, as with all other Non-Executive Directors on the STS Board, is unpaid. However, all reasonable out-of-pocket expense incurred on STS business will be reimbursed immediately via BACS.

 What Is The Organisational Structure?

The Association Management Group Chair is a Director on the Board and a Non-Executive Director, appointed in accordance with the Articles of Association and with direct reporting responsibilities to the Chair of STS. The AMG Chair is responsible for appointing and managing the AMG as they see fit to best deliver the required outcomes.
